Updates to IELTS Writing test delivery mode

In selected countries, Writing on Paper is planned to be available from mid-2026 as an option for the IELTS on computer test. If test takers choose Writing on Paper, their Writing component tasks will be shown on screen, but they will be given an IELTS Writing Answer Sheet and a pen to complete the tasks.

The task types, scoring and time allocation of the Writing component are the same whether it is taken on computer or on paper. It’s the same trusted IELTS test that has helped millions of test takers succeed.

In November 2025, a field trial was undertaken to assess score comparability between the current paper-based test and the ‘Writing on Paper’ delivery mode for IELTS on computer, and to understand test takers’ perceptions of the new delivery mode. Participants completed ‘Writing on Paper’ within 90 days of their previous paper-based test and responded to a perception survey.

Overall, results indicate:

  • Scores remain effectively the same across both. There was a strong alignment of scores across skills when comparing IELTS Writing on Paper with participants’ previous paper-based test performance.
  • Participants perceived IELTS Writing on Paper as a fair test and easy to use. Their performance and perceptions were not negatively affected by the computer-based parts of the test, or by moving to paper for the writing task.
  • Results indicate that IELTS Writing on Paper provides a positive test-taker experience that builds test takers' confidence without compromising the reliability of the result.

Therefore, if you plan to study, work or migrate to Australia, you will need to take the full IELTS on computer option.

Results

Test takers will receive their results within five days after the test date. The IELTS Test Results Form will not specify which option the test taker chose for the Writing component.

If test takers choose to take One Skill Retake for Writing on Paper, they must retake the Writing component in the same delivery mode they chose for their original test.
