NCWU originated from Water Conservancy School of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Central People’s Government, which was established in Beijing in 1951 and renamed Beijing Water Conservancy School of the Ministry of Water Resources in 1954. It merged Beijing Hydropower School and Beijing Hydropower Correspondence College to establish Beijing Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1958. The institute was moved to Yuecheng Reservoir in Cixian County, Hebei Province in 1969 and renamed Hebei Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1971. It was relocated in Handan, Hebei Province in 1977 and renamed North China Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1978. It was moved to Zhengzhou, Henan Province in 1990 and its management was transferred to Henan Province by the Ministry of Water Resources in 2000.
