Southwest University of Political Science and Law is the earliest institution of higher politics and law established in New China. The predecessor of the school was the Southwest People's Revolutionary University founded in 1950 by Liu Bo as the principal. In 1953, the Southwest School of Political Science and Law was established on the basis of the Department of Political Science and Law of the Southwest People's Revolutionary University. In 1978, it was approved as a national key university by the State Council; in 1993, it was approved as a doctoral degree authorization unit by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; in 1995, it was renamed Southwest University of Political Science and Law with the approval of the former State Education Commission.
